The photography industry's major event of the year, Photo District News' PhotoPlus Expo, will take place in New York in late October. The event's program is as diverse as usual, spanning a multitude of creative, technical and business topics over three days.

"Art of the portrait," with London-born, NY-based Platon, precedes "Microstock superstars." PDN's Daryl Lang and Lee Torrens of Microstock Diaries will share the panel with micro photographers Yuri Arcurs and Kelly Cline, whose names have become familiar to longtime professional shooters during this decade.

Aspen photographer Tyler Stableford will discuss "World Class Stock," focusing on getting the money outdoor shot. Stableford, who specializes in challenging adventure and heavy-industry photography, will share travel, lighting and financial tips.

Getty Images' Paul Foster and Amy Steigbigel will present "Real Faces, Commercial Impact." Discussion will center on the shift toward greater authenticity in commercial photography, from street casting to the blurring boundaries between reportage and stock.

Dan Heller will take on the difficult subject of stock photography and the consumer. Heller will discuss the basics of consumer marketing, pricing and Web design, as well as critical business issues that distinguish this newfound buyer market from the traditional stock customer.

This is but a preview: PhotoExpo runs as many as 11 concurrent panels. Non-stock topics span from fine-art to wedding photography, digital workflows and the future of stills in a video world. PhotoExpo starts on Thursday, Oct. 23.
