As of Tuesday, the U.S. Copyright Office's electronic registration system is the preferred way to register basic claims for visual arts and other works. The eCO, which stands for electronic copyright office, offers a number of advantages, including lower filing fees, faster processing and online claim tracking. Speed is by far the most important benefit, since the Copyright Office disclosed its eight-month backlog of hard-copy registration applications last April.
