Europeana Hiccups at Launch

Launched in mid-November, Europeana is the European Union’s project to digitize the books, paintings, music and other content housed by the region’s libraries, museums and other cultural institutions. On Nov. 20, the library launched with 3.5 million digital objects—only to crash under overwhelming user traffic.

Currently, the Europeana Web site “is temporarily not accessible due to overwhelming interest after its launch (10 million hits per hour).” The development team is working on a more robust version, slated for release in mid-December.
