PhotoShelter's Shoot! The Day, held last weekend, produced an estimated quarter of a million images; many will be available for licensing this week. The company believes it to be among the largest single-day contributions to stock photography in the history of the industry.

The event attracted over 300 attendees to New York, where PhotoShelter hosted discussions, product demos and on-location shoots. The company estimates that an additional 4,200 photographers participated remotely by shooting image within five pre-defined categories. Identified by a recent buyer survey as most lacking in freshness and diversity, the categories included youth culture, business and technology, families and kids, active seniors and still life.

Resulting images submitted to The PhotoShelter Collection will be judged for prizes, including a coveted Nikon camera and lens duo. Winners will be announced on Sept. 8.

In addition to photographers, the New York symposium was attended by manufacturers, retailers, industry groups and service providers. Keynote speakers included Rob Haggart of aphotoeditor.com and Rachel Rein of ad agency Hill Holiday. Panelists included ad agency and magazine staffers from Time, Travel & Leisure, Portfolio, Strawberry Frog, Greater Than One and Unit7.  PhotoShelter says the event helped establish a much-needed dialogue between photographers and image buyers.
