Photo Ten Five: New Information Resource

If you’re looking for information about all things related to photography, and are afraid you might have missed something important, you might want to check out Jain Lemos’ new Photo Ten Five website.

Using a Drudge Report format, Photo Ten Five’s site structure displays customized headlines linking to all type of photography news, including stories that appear in many photography publications worldwide, trade association information, the latest from equipment manufacturers and suppliers, education organizations, technology and app developers and stock photo agencies.

The problem is that it may be too much. You may be diving into a black hole which offers so much to consume that you can never work your way out. There doesn’t seem to be much curation or prioritizing of information under certain categories. It is all thrown at you and you’ve got to dig through everything until you find something useful. Lemos says, “all news is curated,” but it is hard to understand the principles behind the curation.

It reminds me of stock photo collections with over 200 million images, poor keywording and very little organizational structure. So the researcher must spend hours digging through everything to see if they can find anything useful.

On the other hand, you may find resources that didn’t know existed which you may want to spend more time perusing in the future.

Active photographers and editors asked to survey the site indicated that most of the linked stories were new to them, meaning Photo Ten Five is curating news and stories they aren’t regularly seeing. They enjoyed reading down the site’s headlines in all three columns and clicked through when the story sounded interesting.

Jain Lemos is a New York Times No. 1 bestselling book producer, noted photography publishing expert, author and innovator. She is the former Executive Director of the American Society of Picture Professionals, and has worked with top creative teams at Twentieth Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, HarperCollins, Chronicle Books, National Geographic and Lonely Planet.

If you have some extra time to check out this site you’ll probably learn something you didn’t know.
