Motivated by the European Union’s challenge to develop a technological system that would make it easier for European citizens to gain access to cultural resources CEPIC has developed the CEPIC Image Registry (CIR) that will allows simultaneous visual or text search across thousands of image databases. The ultimate stock photo licensing tool. This will certainly accelerate the race to the bottom in pricing while benefiting companies like Picscout and AGE (who is president of CEpic, coincidence ?) . While the intend is certainly commendable, the execution, for now, seems messy and potentially more damaging than useful. Finally, if massive collections like Getty, Corbis, Alamy refuse to sign up, it will never work. Are they numbers on the success/failure of Pacasearch ? It would be interesting know .
