CEPIC Congress

The CEPIC Congress, the premier international event for those who license rights to stock photography is only a little more than a month away.

This year it will take place at The Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane in London from May 16th through May 18th. The traditional Opening Reception will launch the Congress on the evening of May 15, 2012 and the Annual Industry Party will be held on Friday the 18th.

So far more than 500 people from 34 different countries have signed up to attend. This is a 20% increase over the numbers who were signed up a month before the last two congresses held in Istanbul (2011) and Dublin (2010). This would appear to indicate that business is improving and there is a more positive attitude about the future than was the case in the past two years.

One of the main reasons stock agency representatives attend the Congress is the chance to meet other agents from around the world and make arrangements for wider distribution of their imagery. Ninety tables have been set aside for this purpose.

In addition there will be three days of seminars on important issues facing the stock photo industry. May 16th has been designated as The Photocentric Day. This program has been organized by the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) and brings photographers together at CEPIC for a day of Inspiration and Learning under the theme: “Where Does the Content Provider Fit in the New Stock Photography Business Reality?”

The sessions will include an update by Nancy Wolff, David Wood and Charles Swan on Legal and Legislative Copyright Issues in the United States and Europe.  Allen Murabayashi of Photoshelter will present on the topic “Does the Content Provider Still Need the Traditional Stock Distributor to Make a Profit?”

In addition there will be a panel discussion featuring Anthony Harris, Eugene Mopsik and Chris Shain on how “Content Creators and Distributors Can Partner for Mutual Benefit.”

The 6th edition of the Metadata/IPTC Conference will be held on May 17th and will have the theme of “Not Just Searching: Finding is the Key to Effective Business.” There will be discussions about visual search, orphan works, automated licensing and what search should look like in the future.

The general program title for May 18th is Industry Day, a full interactive program that will examine how the industry has evolved in the last year, and take a look at trends that are around the corner. For more details click here.
