On Thursday, March 26 Boston will, for the first time, host Visual Connections’ spring visual media expo at the modern and accessible Joseph B. Martin Conference Center at Harvard Medical School.

This free professional development opportunity is for buyers and researchers of creative and editorial photography, footage and illustration. The one-day program offers a unique opportunity to gain knowledge about sourcing, licensing and using imagery; discover new sources of stock media; meet the people behind the images; learn about the latest trends and pick up tips; network with peers; and enjoy a free lunch or beer/wine after work.

There will be two Q&A Sessions, sponsored by ASPP, both free to attend (pre-registration required). The keynote session at 10am, 360° view of copyright, trends and technology in visual licensing today, will examine what’s new and changed in the industry today. On the panel will be an attorney specialized in copyright law from Locke Lord LLP, senior staff from Corbis and 500px, an editorial rights manager from Pearson Education, an art buyer, and a technology guru.

The afternoon session at 2pm, Licensing stills and footage for digital use: what you need to know, will focus on the particular challenges of licensing for e-books, websites, apps, videos, games, social media posts, and mixed-media campaigns. Our panels of experts will include senior executives from Aurora Photos, StockFood and Dissolve, and two buyers experienced in digital rights licensing.

The exhibit floor opens at noon and will showcase a wide range of image/footage agencies, including specialists in art, history, entertainment, food, disability and travel, as well as distinctive general stock imagery suited to creative publishing and design. This is where attendees can discover unusual and inspiring new sources of images and footage; discuss specific project requirements; and negotiate licensing deals.

Personal contact is much missed in today’s e-connected world, and one of the main reasons why trade shows still have a role. It’s not just good for the soul: it’s good for business.

Attendees can enjoy a complimentary lunch, snacks and beverages, and a Happy Hour beer or wine from 5pm sponsored by Bridgeman Images and Danita Delimont Stock PHotography. There is also a free prize drawing sponsored by exhibitors, lots of cool giveaways and the usual great buzz.

Entry is free, but restricted to professional image buyers and researchers. Full details and registration may be found at visualconnections.com/boston
