Getty Images continues to perform strongly at this year’s photojournalism competitions. Getty photographers took all three top honors and an additional honorable mention in the sports photojournalism category of the Best of Photojournalism 2009 and several other top sports-photography prizes. Now in its eight year, the BOP honors still and television photojournalism and is a project of the National Press Photographers Association.

Quinn Rooney of Getty Images AsiaPac has won the title of Sports Photojournalist of the Year. Many of the images in Rooney’s 2009 portfolio were shot during the Beijing Olympics and various Australia-based tournaments, with some breathtaking photographs from less-known events, such as the Asian Beach Games held in October in Bali, Indonesia.
Getty’s Al Bello and Cameron Spencer took home the second and third awards in the same category. Bello also won the top honor in the BOP Olympics feature category. Chris McGrath of Getty Images South America took the third prize for a general sports feature. Getty photographers also won a number of honorable mentions in all sports-related BOP categories.
