Jupiterimages Accused of Secretly Pocketing Revenues

Posted on 12/29/2008 by Julia Dudnik Stern | Printable Version | Comments (3)

According to a recent article in seemingly defunct European image magazine Visuell (as republished by About the Image), Jupiterimages has been taking a cut of image revenues off the top—before splitting it with image owners, as mandated by contracts between the company and its suppliers. Reportedly, Jupiterimages has been keeping 20% of the licensing price as an "administrative fee" for image research. The customers are not charged more, but image owners are paid less, as only 80% of total revenue is divided according to the contractually established ratio.

Do they quote any sources for this information?

    If this is true...
I hope that the owners who sold Jupiterimages to Getty are on the hook for this, and not Getty. And I hope that the contributing photographers are compensated. If this is true, it is a very big case of dirty tricks from a stock agency that never was too high on my list. There had to be more than a few inside people who know this was going on. Not too cool. I have never had any images with Jupiter, but if I did, I would be working my calculator and looking for some answers and some $$$.

I have some images with jupiterimages. I contacted them about this. They assert that this is a misrepresentation. Because of my contract I cannot give you details of what they told me. I expect jupiterimages to send a request to "correct the record" with many forums that reported this.
