Entertainment industry nonprofit California Copyright Conference has issued
a statement protesting the proposed U.S. orphan-works legislation.
According to the group, both the Senate and House versions of the bill threaten all copyright owners. The objections are in line with previously voiced concerns, including the increased burden on the copyright owner and the reduction in remedies available under the current law.
Beverly Hills attorney and Conference president Cheryl Hodgson points out that while the original premise of the legislation was to protect libraries, museums and other nonprofits, the bills go much further and, in her opinion, create an incentive to steal.
