Born in 1928 in New York, Magnum photographer Dennis Stock passed away in Sarasota, Fla., on January 11. He was 81 years old.
Stock’s first major professional achievement was a 1947 first prize in Life’s Young Photographers contest. He joined Magnum in 1951.
Perhaps best known are Stock’s images of James Dean. He also photographed a number of musicians, including Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Gene Krupa and Duke Ellington, for his book Jazz Street. His later work ranged from producing documentary films and capturing California hippies to landscape, urban and flower photography. He was highly prolific, generating a book or an exhibit almost every year since the 1950s.
