The American Society of Media Photographers will present second annual ASMP Arnold Newman Prize to Jonathan Torgovnik on May 13. Supported by Getty Images, Canon and Photo District News, the prize recognizes environmental portraiture - images of subjects shot in their natural environment, such as home of office - pioneered by photographer Arnold Newman, who died two years ago.

Getty Images, which licenses the work of both Newman and Torgovnik, will present the latter with a $2,500 cash grant. Torgovnik will also receive a Canon EOS 30D camera.

The prize honors a reportage series entitled "Intended Consequences: Genocide Mothers, Children of Rape," which resulted from a Newsweek assignment that took Torgovnik to Rwanda. The project has previously won a number of critical accolades and awards, including the 2007 Photographic Portrait Prize from the U.K. National Portrait Gallery, a $20,000 Getty Images Grant for Editorial Photography and a Documentary Photography Project Fellowship from the Open Society Institute.

Torgovnik, who co-founded Foundation Rwanda to help his photographic subjects, is continuing the work. He plans a fourth trip to Rwanda this summer. MediaStorm is also working on a multimedia piece, and an Aperture book is slated for a release in 2009. In addition, Amnesty International is using the images as basis for an upcoming education curriculum guide on the consequences of genocide and sexual violence.
