Getty Images has decided to reduce the duration of rights-ready and rights-managed images available under its new Web-use license to three months from the previously announced one year.
Jonathan Klein has not issued a public response to the letter authored by several industry organizations, which asked Getty Images to remove rights-managed imagery from the $49 Web-use license. The duration was announced by Nick Evans-Lombe, executive vice president for imagery, products and services, who issued a statement to Getty photographers.
In large part, the statement provided deeper rationale for the new product than the original Getty announcement. Evans-Lombe discussed the rising demand for imagery on the Internet, the downward trend of pricing of such uses and Getty's own customer experiences.
The organizations that authored the letter remain dissatisfied and plan to pursue the matter this week. There are also several industry bodies that have yet to weigh in on this issue, most notably CEPIC, BAPLA and PACA. According to Cathy Aron, the executive director of PACA, the topic is on the agenda for the organization's next board meeting on September 25. PACA plans to issue a statement at that point.
