Adding Images To iStock Produces Mixed Results

Some iStock contributors continue to add significant numbers of images to their collections, despite the decline in the number of downloads and we presume revenue, since average prices per-image downloaded have also declined.

Overall, the 430 contributors we have been tracking since 2011 grew their collections an average of 14% during the last 12 months by adding 339,447 images. On July 1, 2015 they had a total of 2,433,409 images in their iStock collections and on July 1, 2016 that number had risen to 2,772,856.

However, this number can be very deceptive. A small number of contributors are adding the bulk of the images and 58% this group of iStock’s most successful contributors in the last 12 months. A full 41% have added nothing to their collections in the last year, or removed images.

Two grew their collections by more than 100%. Rawpixel added 16,607 images to its collection and downloads rose from 240,000 to something less than 280,000. Blackjack3D more than doubled the size of its collection and had less than 10,000 additional downloads.

One of the most successful – monkeybusinessimages – grew its collection by 27% during the year to 38,851 images and had between 40,000 and 50,000 downloads during the year. Nevertheless, even for them this is a decline. They started with iStock in 2008 and have over 670,000 total downloads to date. Thus, over an 8-year period this averages out to 83,750 downloads per year.


 
One-hundred-ten contributors (26%) grew their collections by more than 10%, but many of those with more than 100,000 career downloads had less than 10,000 additional downloads during the year. Of those with less than 100,000 career downloads 78% had less than 3,000 total downloads during the year. These are among the most successful contributors to iStock.

It is interesting to note that some of those like pagadesign, geopaul, konradlew, Jbryson added no new images to their collections and still had between 10,000 and 20,000 downloads. Kevinruss and mediaphotos saw sales continue to grow while removing images from their collections.



The most important take away is that the number of images in the collection, or the number of images added recently, have little relation whatsoever to the number of images downloaded, or revenue. More images will not necessarily generate more revenue.

This list is indexed on Column 5, the Maximum Downloads in the last 12 Months. Column 2 indicates the year the contributor started with iStock. The last three columns deal with images in the collection. Note that the number of images in the collection, or the percent of growth in that number during the last 12 months has little to do with sales.

Also note the 140 contributors have less than 10,000 download. This number could be much less. All these 140 have more than 100,000 total downloads. Given the way the numbers are reported we have no way of narrowing the number more precisely. Some of the contributors lower down with 4,000, 5,000 or 6,000 maximum downloads may actually have more downloads that some of those in the 10,000 group. We have no way of determining that exactly.
