Adding Images To iStock: Contributor Trends

An increasing number of iStock’s most productive contributors seem to be pulling back on their production of new images. Of the 430 photographers and illustrators we have been tracking for more than four years only 34% have added more than 100 images to their collections in the last six months. That leaves two-thirds of this group of contributors who have added fewer than 100 images or removed images from the collection.

The 430 have had a combined total of 55,479,000 iStock downloads in their careers or about one-third of the company’s total downloads since its founding. They currently have 2,433,409 images in the iStock collection, or an average of 5,659 images per contributor.

Forty-one contributors have added zero images to their collections and another 32 have removed a total of 2,949 images in the last six months. Clearly, it is not just those with the poorest skills who are pulling back or dropping out.



Fifty-five percent have either grown their collection by less than 10% in the last two years, or removed images.  24% have added nothing in 2 years or removed images.

Some might ask why these people are leaving their images with iStock if they are so dissatisfied with the results. The images are still generating some revenue, just not as much as they might have generated in the past. The contributors have probably decided that they will ride-it-out and earn what they can as long as they can since no more work is required for them to leave the images where they are.



If they are non-exclusive they probably have the same images with other distributors and may be earning more from some of those distributors than from iStock. Some may have switched from being exclusive with iStock to non-exclusive in order to be able to place the same images with other distributors.

Many have certainly decided that the royalties they are receiving no longer justify the out-of-pocket expense costs, plus production time required, to continue to produce new images. They have moved on to another strategy for earning a living.

Column 2 in the chart below indicates whether the contributor is exclusive or non-exclusive with iStock. Column 3 indicates whether the contributor is an illustrator (I), photographer (P) or a person who shows both photography and illustration (PI). Column 4 shows the contributor’s total career downloads as of the end of 2014 and Column 5 shows total downloads on July 1, 2015. (For more information about downloads see here.)

Column 6 shows the total images the contributor had in the collection on July 1, 2015. Column 7 shows the number of images added in the previous six months and Column 8 shows the images added in the previous two years. It is interesting to compare Column 8 with Column 6 to get a sense of how much most contributors have backed off contributing in the past 2 years. The final two columns show percent of the contributor’s total collection added in the past two years and the year the contributor first began submitting images to iStock.
