Getty Video Producers: Get Ready For Some Low Royalties

Posted on 9/26/2018 by Jim Pickerell | Printable Version | Comments (2)

Getty Images has just done a deal with www.animoto.com to provide unlimited video clips to Animoto video producers. Animoto says, “Now when you create marketing videos in Animoto, you'll have unlimited access to our stunning collection of stock photos and video clips at no extra cost beyond your subscription.”

So what do those subscriptions cost? An Animoto Professional subscription costs $22 per month ($264 per year) and a Business subscription costs $34 per month ($408 per year). Presumably, Animoto gets to keep some portion of that money for the services they provide. We have no idea how much Getty gets for the clips they provide.

Suppose an Animoto subscriber only creates one video per month. How many clips will they need for a single video? If Getty gets 50% of the monthly fee (say $11) then they knock their percentage off the top and divide the remainder among the clip producers. The fee per clip could easily be $1.00 or less. Of course, if the Animoto subscriber produces several videos the royalty share for the videographer will probably be a lot less than $1.00 per clip.

In addition anyone signing up for Animoto gets a 14-day free trial so some of the videographers will get nothing for the use of their video clips.

Animoto says, “We're super excited about our new stock library, and we wanted to share some of that excitement with you. That's why we're offering 35% off an annual Professional plan through October 4, 2018. Give our Getty Images stock a try and find out how we're working every day to make video creation faster, easier, and more polished for you and your brand.”

This offering may be for still photos also. The Animoto promotion says that uses get access to “Over 1 million stock photos and videos.” We don’t know how much “Over 1 million” that might be. Getty have over 5.8 million video clips, 27.4 million Creative still images and 113 million editorial images. Maybe they are only making a small portion of their collection available to Animoto, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
