iStock Downloads Continue To Decline, First Half 2014

On average, there has been a continued decline in the number of downloads for 431 of iStock’s leading contributors during the first half of 2014.  I have been tracking the activity for these contributors for more than 2 year, and about half of them since 2009. Since these individuals joined iStock their images have been downloaded a combined total of at least of 54,291,100 times and a possible maximum of 56,658,200. (See for how I arrived at these numbers.)

Of these totals the minimum number of total downloads between January 1, 2014 and June 30,2014 was only 1,043,100. This compares with 1,977,000 during the same period in 2013. In the year between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014 this group of contributors had a minimum of 2,342,100 downloads compared with 3,735,000 for the previous 12 months.

Combined this group of contributors represent about one-third of all downloads by all iStock contributors.



When iStock reports downloads they provide a minimum number, but the actual number of downloads for each contributors are between that number and the next higher round number. Thus, it is possible that these contributors had quite a few more downloads during this period. To arrive at that number I have calculated the maximum number of downloads each contributor might have if they were just one download away from reaching the next higher number above the number iStock reported. Then I subtracted the minimum number iStock reported for the contributor at the beginning of the period.

Thus, for the first half of 2014 there was a possible maximum number of 3,410,200 downloads for this group of contributors and a possible 4,280,000 for the same period in 2013. If we assume that at the beginning of the period every contributor had just passed the minimum number of downloads reported and at the end of the period they were all within one download of the next higher number then the average decline would have been about 20%. If we assume they were at the minimum number at both the beginning and end of the period the decline would have been about 47%. The actual number of downloads probably varied widely among the contributors and thus the real decline is probably somewhere between 20% and 47%.

It should also be noted that a decline in downloads doesn’t necessarily reflect a decline in revenue generated. Prices vary based on the image and the size of the file delivered. iStock may have licensed many more high priced exclusive images in 2014 than in 2013. There is reason to believe that the number of exclusive sales has been going up relative to the number of lower priced non-exclusive sales. In addition, the sales of this group of contributors may not be representative of the whole.

Exclusive vs Non-exclusive


Of the total number of contributors 316 are represented exclusively by iStock and only 125 are non-exclusive. The vast majority of images represented by iStock and the vast majority of downloads are of images belonging to non-exclusive contributors. But, it is believed that around 75% of the revenue generated by iStock is from the licensing of images belonging to the exclusive contributors. The average license fee of an exclusive contributor’s image (also referred to as Midstock) is in the range of $40. The average license fee of a non-exclusive contributor’s image (also referred to as Microstock) is in the range of $6. The royalty share of the gross fee that exclusive contributors receive is roughly twice that of non-exclusive contributors.

It is believed that there are currently about 20 million images in the iStock collection. The combined total images in the collection from this group of 431 contributors is as follows:

In the last 2 years these contributors have added 548,166 images to iStock growing their participation in the collection by an average of 37%. In the last year alone they have grown their collections by an average of 22%. However, a significant number of contributors have been growing their collections by a much smaller amount, or actually pulling images. The breakdown is as follows:

150 have grown their collection size by more than 20%,
90 have grown their collection size between 10% and 20%,
48 have grown their collection size between 5 and 10%,
69 have added nothing of pulled images and 11 have pulled a significant number of images.

The chart below provides a breakdown of the downloads of each individual over the last two years. The second column indicates whether the individual is exclusive of non-exclusive. For July 1, 2014 I have listed the minimum and maximum possible downloads. Using the maximum possible downloads figure I have calculated the percentage of each individuals total downloads that have occurred in the last two years and placed this figure is in the last column. Note that actual percentage will probably be somewhat lower because most contributors will have had fewer than the maximum possible sales.

It should also be noted that the first three lines – Peopleimages, Yuri and Yuri_Arcurs, - are all images produced by Yuri Arcurs. In the last year he has gone from being non-exclusive with iStock to exclusive and has chosen to divide his collection. I have placed these collections together for easy understanding.
