House Organs and Newsletters

House organ is a term used for magazine and newspapers published by a corporation, institution or fraternal organization. Any house organ distributed to member of an organization is considered external, as the members are essentially their customers. Internal house organs are strictly reserved for anything distributed to employees only. It is important to clarify who the audience is in order to set the price.

Negotiating Tips

The client may refer to the use as an "internal" newsletter, even though it is being distributed to members, not employees. As stated above, we consider a newsletter to members of an organization to be an “external” newsletter, commanding higher fees. For instance, even though an HMO's newsletter just goes to it's members, those mem¬bers are essentially it's customers. The HMO produces the newslet¬ter as a service to it's members in and effort to keep it's customers happy.
