Shutterstock Ten Year History

Posted on 5/1/2020 by Jim Pickerell | Printable Version | Comments (0)

The chart below allows you to easily track the last 10-year growth trend of Shutterstock quarter-by-quarter and see the number of images in the collection, number of downloads and the gross quarterly revenue at the end of each quarter. You can also see the average revenue-per-download and revenue-per-image-in-the-collection trends.

The final column gives an indication of the possible maximum percentage of images in the collection that were downloaded during the quarter. The percentage would be reached if no unique images was downloaded more than once during the quarter. Since we know that many images are downloaded multiple times by different customers the actual percentage of “unique images” downloaded during any quarter would be lower in every instance.

Nevertheless, these percentages give a good indication of the trend over several years and points to the fact that more images without any editing does not, in and off itself, result in more sales. As we have said over and over that growth in the size of all image collection has to a great extent made it harder and harder for customers to find the “right” image for their projects. It shows no appreciation of the customer’s time and in the long run is not a friendly way to treat customers.
