Three Categories Of Image Creators

Yesterday I provided a list of the 431 of the top iStock contributors in the order of the total number of image downloads they have had in their careers. In the coming week I will explore some other ways to look at the available data.

It is important to recognize that not all the people on this list are photographers. I have separated them into three groups – Illustrators (I), people with a mix of illustration and photography in their collections (PI) and photographers.

Almost half of the contributors are either “I” or “PI.” In looking at the portfolios of the PIs it often hard to tell whether the individual is primarily a photographer with an excellent focus on basic concepts and a lot of experience or a trained graphic artist who does some photography on the side. Each individual in this group may have different training and experience, but if I have to weight the group, I suspect most of graphic artists.

When grouping the contributors in this way, one of the first thing to notice is that the Illustrators tend to have many fewer images on the site than photographers and yet their images are in very high demand. Atropat, the illustrator with the most popular illustration (over 17,000 downloads) only has 192 images on the site and over 57,000 total downloads of all his images. A majority of the illustrators have less than 1,000 illustrations on the site.

The PIs also tend to have many fewer images than photographers on the site, although a somewhat higher average than illustrators. On average illustrators have 42.58 downloads per image on the site; PIs have 29.81 and the photographers with almost 4 times as many images as the illustrators have half the number of downloads per image on average. One obvious conclusion is that a much higher percentage of images posted by photographers are images no one wants to use.



I have a theory, and no solid way to prove it, but it is something to think about. I believe the illustrators and the graphic designers have much better contact and communication with the end users than do the photographers. In some cases they are end users. As a result they have a better understanding of what customers are asking for and what they are rejecting. They don’t waste their time producing, or uploading, things no one wants to use. In many cases the images they are uploading are images they have already sold to one of their clients, and they are just seeking supplementary income from those images.

The vast majority of photographers, on the other hand, never have any direct communication with the people who are using their pictures. By living in the world they see a very small percentage of imagery that is use. They base their next photo production on what they like to shoot, and to some degree what has worked for them in the past.



Years ago when agents had more direct communication with the end users, they could guide their photographers in their decisions as to what to shoot. Now, the remaining small agencies have turned over much of the selling of their work to a few large distributors and they no longer talk to many customers. The large distributors do, from time to time, supply broad trend guidance to their contributors, but photographers with specific skills and talents often find it difficult to apply to their shoots.

Photographers who can actually have some direct contact with picture buyers and uses and those that can focus on a particular segment of the market that they understand well may have better success than generalists.

Top Sellers


I also took a look at the top selling images of each contributor. I organized each contributor’s portfolio by “Most Popular” and recorded the total downloads for the first and fifth image in each collection. I multiplied the number for the fifth image by four assuming that images 2,3 and 4 four had at least that many downloads. Then I added in the number for the most downloaded image and came up with a minimum number for the 5 most downloaded images. Obviously, the actual number would be somewhat higher, but this at least gave me a ballpark figure.

On average the top 5 images from each collection were responsible for 9% of the total downloads. The average percentage for Illustrators, Photographers and PIs were about the same. The important thing to recognize is that at least 9% of all the download of over 2 million images (2,076,599) were of 2,155 image, or one of every 964 images.

Half the illustrators and PIs had more than 10% of their downloads from the top five images. Atropat had 44.6% of his downloads from the top 5; PI AlexMax had 34.3% of his downloads from the top 5 and photographer CostinT had 41% of his downloads from his top 5 images.

In charts below the second column indicates whether the contributor is exclusive (E) or non-exclusive (N). The third column indicates whether the contributor is an illustrator (I), a photographer (P) or a person who shows both photography and illustration (PI). Column 4 is the total minimum downloads as of July 1, 2014. Column 5 shows the images the contributor had in the collection as of July 1, 2014. Column 6 is the minimum downloads of the contributors best seller and column 7 is the minimum downloads of the 5th best seller. Column 8 is the total minimum downloads of the contributors best 5 images and the last column is the percentage of total downloads represented by these best 5 images.
