Is RM The Only Place To Find Great Pictures?

Many RM photographers still believe that microstock images are of much lower quality than RM and that customers who want images of the highest quality will continue to go to RM sites for the images they need. Unfortunately, they are only kidding themselves. (Note the difference in number of downloads in this story.)

Yes, there are a lot of images of marginal usefulness on microstock sites, but customers will find many unusable images on RM sites as well. And microstock offers one big advantage. The customer can organize search returns by “Most Popular.”

When looking at images in order of popularity the customer gets the benefit of seeing what other professional buyers have found useful enough to purchase. It turns out that most customers are not looking for a unique image that was created recently or one that no one has ever seen. They just want a good image that clearly illustrates the concept they have in mind and the message they are trying to get across to their customers. Ordering search returns based on popularity saves them time.



Image buyers never have enough time. And they are happy to use the same image someone else has used if it happens to work well for their project.

As I reviewed in the last few weeks the portfolios of some of iStock’s most productive photographer it became clear that that iStock has a lot of great images that customers love to use.



The best single image of each of the 431 contributors were downloaded a combined total of 1,967,050 times. That is an average of 4,564 downloads for the best selling image of each of these contributors. One image from anouchka has been downloaded more than 24,000 times. Many from other creators have been downloaded just a few thousand less times.

If we look at the 5 most downloaded images for each of these creators (a total 2,155 images) they have been downloaded a combined total of at least 4,871,050 times.

(To arrive at this number I recorded the minimum downloads for the first and fifth images in each creator’s collection. Then I multiplied the number for the fifth image by four assuming that images 2,3 and 4 four had at least that many downloads. The 4,971,050 is this number for images 2,3,4 and 5 plus image 1.  Obviously, the actual number would be somewhat higher, but at least this gives us some indication of the total downloads of these images.)



For some perspective, this number probably represents more than the total RM images licensed by Getty Images in the last three years and certainly represents more than all the RM and traditional RF images licensed by Getty in the last year.

Understanding What Customers Are Buying


It is one thing to work hard to produce an unusual image. It may be quite a different thing to produce images customers want to buy. To get an understanding of what customers are buying it is useful to look at the portfolios of some of these top sellers. The following is a system that should simplify the process of reviewing the portfolios of those listed below.

Probably the best place to start is with Yuri’s portfolio: http://www.istockphoto.com/search/portfolio/10204782

Click on this link and it will take you directly to Yuri’s portfolio. Make sure the “Most Popular” option is clicked so the images will be displayed in the order of the most downloaded. If you want to see how many times any of the images have been downloaded click on the image. It will take you to a preview of the image and under “Details” you’ll find the number of downloads.

In Yuri’s case the most popular image has been downloaded more than 13,000 times, the 5th image more than 12,000 times, the 10th image more than 10,000 times and the 20th image more than 8,300 times.

To see the work of a different contributor go to the URL from the Yuri search that is in the address bar, delete everything after “portfolio/” and input the “Creator ID” of any other image creator whose work you want to review. (You can find the Creator ID of any of the 431 creators listed below in the 4th column of the chart.)

With this procedure you should be able to review the work of lots of the top sellers in a relatively short period of time.

Note that the “Creator ID” is the number after the = sign. If you want information on a different creator simply delete the Creator ID after the =, replace it with a new ID and do a search.

Choosing Who To Search

A Few Observations


Virtually all the top selling images are graphically clean, generic, and nothing is out of place. There is a lot of talk about buyers wanting more “realistic” and “natural” images. That doesn’t seem to be what they are buying. One caution: many of the sales of the images shown may have come in the early years of iStock when there was less competition. Sales of any particular image may have declined in the last few years, but there are still a significant number of customers using these images.

A lot of the images are simple elements. In many cases they may be used as part of a larger illustration that the designer is creating rather than as a strong stand-alone image. See here (2500 uses), here (4900 uses), here (5500 uses) and here (3800 uses).

Often the tighter close-ups are better and sometimes several different angles of the same situation sell well. Check out this clock image by mbbirdy and some of the other clocks shot at the same time.

When it comes to food the perfect image seems to sell a lot. See vasko’s perfect pizza (1700 uses) and many other variations some of which have sold 1500 and 1300 times. There is also the perfect apple (9200 uses) and cheese (700 uses).

Simple surfaces, textures and backgrounds are also in high demand. Take a look here (4600 uses), here (2600 uses) and here (10,000 uses).

Consider the increased use of illustration as opposed to photography. Consider that 24% of the total images downloaded by these 431 image creators were illustration. Then add in the additional 20% of images created by PIs, much of it illustration rather than photography. Also consider that a little over a year ago Shutterstock announced that one-third of their downloads were illustration. As it becomes easier and easier to create realistic illustrations it seems that more and more image users are turning to illustration to get exactly what they want rather than to trying to find it as a photograph. In addition as photographers are pushed more and more to aim for perfection, given what is selling, some of the realism is being list.

Isolated objects, and close-ups may be in high demand, but unless you can identify a subject that hasn’t been shot it may be hard to get such images accepted at iStock or other collections given the existing huge oversupply.  

Learning the concepts that are in demand is important. Finding other clean, simple ways to illustrate these same concepts is what photographers should be seeking. But trying to copy any of these images is not only illegal, but probably a waste of time. Even assuming that you can create a slightly better image than the best seller, and you use the same keywords, the image still may not be seen. Remember that most customers organize their search returns by “Most Popular” so the images that have already sold a lot will come up first. If you want to know if your image has a chance of selling determine how many times the 300th or 400th image in the “Most Popular” search has been licensed. Suppose the 300th image has been licensed 30 times. Your image will have to be licensed more than 30 times before it has much of a chance of being seen, but how can it be licensed if it is never seen?
